Implementation engineers turn a verified design into something a factory can make and a tester can check. Three specialties do most of this work: design for test (DFT) engineers make each manufactured chip testable, physical design engineers turn the netlist into a layout, and timing engineers prove that every path meets its deadline. This article describes each, the tools and skills job postings from 2025 and 2026 ask for, how the roles grow, and which ChipVerify tutorials prepare for them.

- Explain how these roles depend on design and on each other
- Choose tutorials that prepare for implementation roles
Design for Test Engineers
Every manufactured chip is tested for defects, and DFT engineers build the structures that make it possible, as Design for Test at SoC Level explains. Postings from 2025 and 2026 describe[1][2][3]:
- inserting scan chains and test compression, and generating and debugging test patterns (ATPG);
- adding memory built-in self-test and repair, boundary scan and test access through JTAG and IJTAG;
- fixing DFT design-rule violations and working with the RTL, timing and physical design teams;
- supporting silicon bring-up and validation on the production tester.
Siemens' DFT tools are the most often named, with Cadence's also appearing, along with scripting in Tcl, Perl or Python and knowledge of the IEEE 1149.1 and 1687 test standards. Experience asked for ranges from about three to fifteen years[1][2]. A 2026 Indian job-market guide described DFT specialists as a smaller pool commanding a premium[4].
Physical Design Engineers
Physical design (PD) engineers take the netlist from synthesis to the final layout. Postings describe the full flow: floorplanning, power planning, placement, clock tree synthesis and routing, followed by closure of setup and hold timing, signal transitions, capacitance and noise, while optimizing power, performance and area[5][6]. Tools named are the place-and-route and timing tools from Synopsys and Cadence, with scripting in Tcl, Perl or Python. Entry and mid-level roles often ask for two to five years of experience and senior roles five to eight or more, with experience at advanced process nodes often preferred[5][6]. The Physical Design tutorial follows the whole flow.
Quick Check
Q: List the main steps a physical design engineer takes a block through, in order.
Show Answer
Floorplanning and power planning, placement, clock tree synthesis, routing, and then closing timing, signal integrity and other checks before sign-off.
Timing Engineers
Static timing analysis (STA) engineers prove that every path in the design meets its timing requirements in every operating condition. Postings describe block- and full-chip sign-off across many combinations of process corners and modes, developing and debugging timing constraints, generating engineering change orders (ECOs) to fix violations, and handling on-chip variation and signal integrity, sometimes including low-power timing[7][8][9]. Experience asked for is often five to eight years for independent sign-off and more for staff roles[7]. The Static Timing Analysis tutorial covers the method.
How the Roles Depend on Each Other
These roles work closely with design and with each other. DFT postings describe working with RTL, timing and physical design teams so that test structures fit[1]; RTL design postings describe designers releasing blocks to physical design after checking synthesis results[10]; and timing constraints written during design are refined by timing engineers through implementation. When a problem is found late, such as a path that cannot meet timing, the fix may need a design change, so implementation work includes diagnosing problems and agreeing fixes with designers.
Where Is This Used?
Implementation is done by chip companies' own teams, by design services companies and by foundry and IP partners. A 2025 report on India's design centers described steady demand for physical design alongside digital design and verification[11], and service companies advertise physical design and timing roles for client projects at advanced nodes[5]. Analog layout, a different kind of physical work, is covered in Analog and Mixed-Signal Roles.
How the Roles Grow
A new implementation engineer usually starts within a senior engineer's area: running parts of the flow on a block, fixing a set of violations, or preparing reports. With experience, they own a block's implementation or its test structures, then larger partitions or the full chip, and then the methodology and flows the team uses. Senior engineers may lead implementation for a project, specialize in areas such as clock design or power integrity, or move into CAD and methodology roles, described in Tools and Platform Roles.
Preparing for These Roles
- Digital Fundamentals and Verilog to read the designs being implemented;
- RTL Synthesis for the netlist and constraints that implementation starts from;
- Static Timing Analysis and Physical Design for timing and layout;
- Unified Power Format for low-power implementation;
- Design for Test at SoC Level for DFT concepts.
Quick Check
Q: Why do DFT engineers need to work with the timing and physical design teams?
Show Answer
Test structures such as scan chains and test clocks change the design's logic, timing and layout. They must meet timing in test mode and fit the floorplan, so DFT, timing and physical design are planned together.
Summary
- DFT engineers add scan, compression, memory self-test and test access, and support testing on silicon.
- Physical design engineers take the netlist through floorplanning, placement, clock tree and routing to sign-off.
- Timing engineers sign off timing across corners and modes, own constraints and generate fixes.
- Postings ask for scripting in Tcl, Perl or Python, and experience from about two years for some roles to more than eight for senior ones.
- Engineers start on parts of the flow and grow to own blocks, the full chip and the methodology.
